Pentecost*

Â Â Â Â

Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.Â They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.Â All of them were filled with the Holy SpiritÂ and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Â

*The name comes from the Greek wordÂ pentekosteÂ which means fiftieth. The holiday isÂ celebrated on the seventh Sunday after Easter which is also fifty days after Easter, hence the name. It commemorates the descent of the Holy SpiritÂ on the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ while they were in Jerusalem celebrating the Feast of Weeks. This important event in the Christian faith is described in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2:1Â31), the fifth book of the New Testament of the Bible.Â (Source)

Pentecost Sunday ~ May 19

Fire Â Pentecost is a time of red -- a color of fire and zeal and passion and heat. The Spirit is incendiary within us. Wear red!Â Fire at Pentecost is not the kind of fire that consumes and destroys; it is the kind of fire that warms, energizes, excites, and empowers.

Dove Â The Spirit came to Jesus' baptism in the form of a dove. The dove is also a symbol of peace, one of Jesus's most profound hopes for the human race.

Wind Â the Hebrew word ר֫וּחַ (ruach) means 'wind' or 'breath'. Like the wind, the Spirit is not seen except by how the surrounding world is affected.

Wednesday Holy Eucharist - 11 am

Pachomius of Tabenissi, Monastic, 348

In 314 Pachomius was baptized and began to practice the ascetic life. Three years later he withdrew to the desert under the guidance of the elder Palamon. According to tradition, after ten years with Palamon he heard a Voice telling him to found a monastic community at Tabbenisi. He and Palamon traveled there, and subsequently Pachomius had a vision in which an angel came to him, clothed in a schema (a type of monastic garment), and gave him a rule for the cenobitic life.

Cenobitic (or coenobitic) monasticism is a monastic tradition that stresses community life. The older style of monasticism, to live as a hermit, is called eremitic. PachomiusÂ rule balanced the communal life with the solitary life; monks live in individual cells but work together for the common good.

In Forks at St. Swithin's - Â Each Sunday at 2:30 pm - We meet at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church for Holy Eucharist or Prayer.
Mid-week Worship Service each Wednesday in person at 11 am.
