Wine into Water

The Diocese at Convention last October announced a collaborative effort between Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) and the Diocese of Olympia to support people worldwide who lack basic water and sanitation systems. This initiative is "Wine Into Water", a reference to Jesus. first miracle at the wedding feast in Cana. A challenge was issued that before Convention 2011 every congregation will host an event to raise funds and awareness of water and sanitation needs. Our St. Andrew's and St. Swithin's congregations will rise to that challenge. We will do more than make a donation, WE WILL DIG A WELL. That's right dig a well. $5,000 will provide a well to a struggling, water deprived village in a third world country and change the lives of its people.

During the time between now and Convention 2011 we will have many opportunities to raise both funds and awareness. Several events are already scheduled as listed below and we look forward to everyone participating in as many as possible. Gift cards will also be available so that a donation may be made in honor of someone dear.

St. Andrew's/St. Swithin's "Wine Into Water" Events

Blessing of collection vessels March 13 at St. Andrew's and St. Swithin's
Every member of the family is asked to bring a water glass, water bottle, cup, or other vessel that might ordinarily hold drinking water. We will wrap them with colorful labels and place them on the Altar for a blessing. The idea is to take them home and begin using them to collect coins as a thank offering. Please limit plastic to non-disposables only.

Priming the Pump Dinner at Camaraderie Cellars March 22
A lovely dinner in the tasting room at Camaraderie Cellars. Owner and wine maker Don Corson will pour the perfect wine with each course and offer insights about pairing wine with foods as we learn about water needs locally and globally. Only 20 places are available at fifty dollars each.

Annual Picnic at Van Calcar's Tree Farm June 19
An awareness and celebration of God's gift of water, especially do we give thanks for the abundance with which God blessed the Olympic Peninsula.

Special Event at Camaraderie Cellars August 26
Both congregations are invited to a casual event on the patio at Camaraderie Cellars after closing hour on Friday August 26. Details are not certain but do save the date for what will be a fun time.

In-Gathering of collection vessels October 30 at St. Andrew's
We use this fifth Sunday to bring our thank offerings back to the Altar, and to celebrate that we have responded to the call to help those in dire need of clean water and sanitation. The date for a similar celebration will be scheduled at St. Swithin's.

This will be a Spirit filled time for us as a church community. We have an opportunity to respond to the needs of our brothers and sisters around the world with genuine Christian concern and action.
